The Side Underwater Museum: A Diver's Guide to the Sunken Sculpture Park

2026-07-25 ° 4 min read

Imagine descending through warm, clear Mediterranean water and finding an exhibition waiting for you on the seabed: sculptures standing in the blue, their outlines softened by algae and sponges, with shoals of fish weaving between them like visitors wandering a gallery. That is the Side Underwater Museum — a sunken sculpture park just off the coast of Side, Antalya, and the flagship trip of our diving centre. This guide explains what the museum actually is, what you will see down there, and how to experience it whether you are a complete beginner or a certified diver.

What Is the Side Underwater Museum?

The Side Underwater Museum is a collection of sculpture exhibits that were deliberately placed on the seabed off Side. The idea combines two things that normally never meet: an open-air art gallery and an artificial reef. On land, a statue stays frozen in time. Underwater, it becomes something alive — the sea claims each figure, covering it with encrusting life and turning hard art into soft habitat. Every year the exhibits look slightly different, which is why even divers who have visited before come back to see how the sea has continued the artists' work.

Because the sculptures rest at recreational depths, the museum is not reserved for experts. It is one of the rare underwater attractions that a first-time diver can genuinely experience, not just hear about from the boat.

What You Will See Underwater

Two things make this dive memorable: the art and the life around it.

Why It Is Unique in the Mediterranean

Underwater sculpture museums are rare worldwide, and the Mediterranean has very few of them — which makes Side an unusual dot on the diving map. Most famous underwater museums lie in distant oceans; here, a genuine sunken gallery sits minutes from one of Turkey's most popular holiday towns. The result is a dive that offers something neither a natural reef nor a land museum can: culture and biology in the same breath, at depths gentle enough for almost anyone. For many of our guests it becomes the story they tell most often after the holiday — not bad for a day that starts with a free hotel pickup.

How We Dive the Museum

Our Side Underwater Museum trip is a full-day boat excursion and our flagship, priced at €45 with everything included: all diving equipment, two guided dives, lunch on board, free two-way hotel transfer, and passenger and diving insurance. The day follows our usual calm rhythm:

Beginners dive without any licence after a full safety briefing, and groups are kept small — three to four divers per instructor — so there is always a professional within arm's reach. Certified divers are just as welcome: bring your logbook and we will sign and stamp your museum dive, a page most dive logs do not have. If it is your very first time, read our first-time diving guide beforehand and arrive knowing exactly what to expect.

Not Diving? Come Anyway

The museum day works beautifully as a mixed group outing. Friends or family members who prefer to stay dry can join the boat as visitors at a reduced rate — they enjoy the cruise, the lunch and the swimming, and can snorkel over the site while the divers are below. Nobody has to choose between a diving day and a day together. You can compare all options on our prices page.

Practical Notes Before You Book

Bring only a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and sunglasses — the rest is on us. Standard health rules apply: no diving during pregnancy or with severe asthma, heart or respiratory conditions, and no flying within 24 hours after diving, so plan the trip at least a day before your flight home. Reservations are free online, you pay on the day of the trip, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours in advance.

See the Gallery the Sea Is Still Painting

Some sights you photograph; a few you actually swim through. The Side Underwater Museum is firmly in the second category — a place where art, fish and warm Mediterranean water share the same room. Reserve your spot on the museum trip online, pay on the day, and come see what the sea has made of the sculptures this season.

Frequently Asked

How much does the Side Underwater Museum dive cost?+

The full-day boat trip costs €45 and includes two guided dives, all equipment, lunch on board, free two-way hotel transfer and passenger and diving insurance. You reserve free online and pay on the day.

Can beginners dive at the Side Underwater Museum?+

Yes. No licence is needed — you receive a full safety briefing and dive with an instructor in small groups of three to four divers. The first dive is a gentle 5–8 metres, the second about 13 metres, always beside your instructor.

Can I visit the museum without diving?+

Yes. Non-divers join the same boat as visitors at a reduced rate, enjoy the cruise and lunch, and can snorkel over the site while the divers are below.

How deep are the museum dives?+

For beginners, the two guided dives run at 5–8 metres in the morning (about 15–25 minutes) and about 13 metres in the afternoon — comfortable recreational depths, with 13 metres as the beginner ceiling. Certified divers dive the real profiles from the same boats: roughly 30 metres on standard certified dives, and down to 60 metres on the deep sites for suitably qualified divers, depending on qualification, conditions and the day's plan.
