Descending over them is a strange, wonderful feeling — you are not looking at museum pieces behind glass, you are floating above history exactly where the sea left it.
The amphorae are only half the story. Broken pots and rocky seabed make perfect hiding places, and this site is known for its residents: octopus tucked into crevices, grouper patrolling the rocks, and moray eels peering out from dark holes. All three are often seen here — though the Mediterranean makes no promises, and neither do we.

Ancient Amphorae on the Seabed: Why This Site Is Special
Amphorae were the workhorse containers of the ancient world — two-handled clay jars used for millennia to carry wine, olive oil, grain and other goods across the Mediterranean. Coastlines like Alanya's sat on busy shipping lanes for centuries, and wherever ships worked, some cargo ended up on the bottom. That is what makes this site near Alanya harbour so memorable: the jars are still down there, resting on the seabed, softened by marine growth and lit by the shifting Mediterranean sun.
What you see underwater is not a tidy museum display. Some shapes are unmistakably jars; others are fragments half-claimed by the sea, their outlines blurred by algae and encrusting life. That is precisely the charm. Hovering above them, you get the same quiet thrill archaeologists describe — the sense that people sailed, traded and sometimes lost everything right here, centuries before anyone thought of package holidays.
A few things we ask of every diver at a heritage site like this one:
- Look, don't touch. Underwater heritage is protected, and every fragment belongs exactly where it lies. Nothing comes up with us — ever.
- Control your buoyancy. Your guide will help you keep a respectful distance so fins and hands never make contact.
- Take memories, not souvenirs. Photos are welcome; pocketing even a small shard is both illegal and destructive.
Because the site sits at an accessible depth, you don't need deep-diving qualifications to experience it. The light is good, the visibility on this coast is typically generous, and the whole scene unfolds calmly beneath you on a guided dive.
Octopus, Grouper and Moray: The Residents of the Amphora Site
Ask any dive guide what makes a great dive site and they will tell you the same thing: structure. Holes, cracks, overhangs, broken pottery — anywhere a creature can wedge itself in and feel safe. The Amphora site has structure everywhere, which is why its marine life is the other headline act.
Octopus are the stars. An amphora is, from an octopus's point of view, a ready-made apartment: hard walls, a narrow entrance, room to hide. Guides here are experienced at spotting the tell-tale signs — a tidy pile of shells outside a hole, a slightly-too-smooth patch of rock that suddenly blinks. Grouper hold territories around the rocky seabed, often hanging in mid-water and watching divers with that unmistakable grumpy-uncle expression. And moray eels do what morays do everywhere: tuck their bodies deep into a crevice and leave only the head showing, mouth slowly opening and closing as they breathe.
Two honest notes. First, these are wild animals in a real sea — octopus, grouper and moray are often seen at this site, but never guaranteed. Anyone who promises you a sighting is selling something. Second, the best way to see more is to behave well underwater:
- Move slowly and breathe calmly — fast fins empty a reef in seconds.
- Let your guide lead; they know the holes where residents like to sit.
- Never touch, chase or corner an animal. A relaxed octopus stays out; a stressed one vanishes.
On a good day, the combination of ancient pottery and living reef makes this one of the most complete dives on the Alanya coast.
Who Can Dive Here? Depth, Experience Level and Safety
The Amphora site is an accessible-level site, and our trips to this coast are built for complete beginners. You do not need a licence, previous dives or even confident swimming skills — every dive is guided one-on-one-style by professional instructors in small groups, and every day starts with a full safety briefing.
The day follows our standard two-dive format. The morning dive goes to 5–8 metres for 15–25 minutes — a gentle introduction where you learn to breathe, equalise and relax. The afternoon dive goes to about 13 metres — the ceiling for beginners — where the seabed, the jars and the residents come into their own. Try-dives are available from around age 10, and if you're travelling with younger children, ask us — gentle kids' pool-style programmes can sometimes be arranged.
A few important health rules apply to all our trips:
- No diving while pregnant, or with severe asthma, heart or respiratory conditions.
- No flying within 24 hours after diving — plan your dive day accordingly.

Depth here is set by your qualification, not by a one-size-fits-all limit. Beginners stay inside the 13-metre ceiling with an instructor beside them. Certified divers dive the real profiles from the same boats — roughly 30 metres on standard certified dives, and down to 60 metres on the deep sites for suitably qualified divers.
