Side vs Kemer Diving: Where Is the Water Clearer?

2026-07-26 ° 4 min read

The Honest Answer First

If your only question is where the water is clearest, the answer is Kemer. The coast west of Antalya drops steeply into deep, cool blue water with very little sand or river sediment to cloud it, and that is exactly why our Kemer scuba diving trip reliably offers the clearest water on this coast. That is geography, not marketing, and we would rather tell you now than have you discover it on the boat.

But visibility is only one part of a diving day. Side has something the Kemer coast does not have and cannot copy: the Side Underwater Museum, a field of roughly 110 sunken sculptures resting at about 12 metres. There is no comparable sculpture park anywhere on this coastline. So the real question is not which water is clearer, but which day you would rather remember.

What Each Day Actually Looks Like

Kemer: deep blue water and classic sites

The Kemer day is our longest at around eight hours door to door, because the coastline there is further from most Antalya-region resorts and the boat cruises along a dramatic, pine-covered shore. Our instructors on this route are PADI-certified, and the underwater terrain is what most people picture when they imagine Mediterranean diving: rock walls, boulder fields, shafts of light and open blue. The Three Islands and Lighthouse area includes a swim-through tunnel at around nine metres that is shallow, wide and genuinely fun even on a first dive.

Side: the museum nobody else has

The Side Underwater Museum trip runs about seven hours and is our flagship day. The sculptures sit at roughly twelve metres, which is comfortably within recreational depth for a beginner and shallow enough that daylight still reaches them. Because the site is a museum rather than a random reef, there is a route to follow and something to look at every few fin kicks. We keep groups small at three to four divers per instructor, and hand-feeding the fish that live among the statues is part of the experience.

What About the Wrecks?

You may have read about the Paris II wreck at 21 to 31 metres or the DO-28 aircraft at 19.5 to 23.3 metres. Both are real, both are on this coast, and both are honestly out of reach for a beginner day trip. They are certified-only dives arranged on request, never part of a standard bookable product. If you are already certified and want them, talk to us before you travel so we can plan the day properly rather than promise it in a booking form.

Side and Kemer Side by Side

Let Your Hotel Do Half the Deciding

Free two-way hotel transfer is included on every trip, but a transfer is still time in a minibus. If you are staying in Side, Kumköy, Sorgun, Çolaklı, Titreyengöl or anywhere along the Manavgat coast, the museum day is the short, easy ride and the natural first choice. If you are based in Kemer, Beldibi, Göynük, Kiriş, Çamyuva or Tekirova, the Kemer boat is on your doorstep and the museum becomes a long day out. Guests in Antalya, Lara or Konyaaltı sit between the two and can reasonably pick either, or look at the Antalya trip instead. You can check what we run from your own resort on the diving from your hotel page.

Everything Both Days Include

Whichever you choose, the package is the same: two guided dives, all equipment, free two-way hotel transfer, a fresh lunch cooked on board, passenger and diving insurance and a full briefing before you get wet. Beginners need no licence, we sign logbooks, and CMAS courses can be arranged on request. Try-dives start from around age ten. Non-divers and snorkelers in your group can come along as boat visitors at a reduced rate, so nobody has to stay behind at the hotel. Please do not dive if you are pregnant or have severe asthma, heart or respiratory conditions, and remember not to fly within 24 hours of diving.

So Which Should You Book?

If you have one diving day in your holiday and you want a dive you will describe to people back home, book the museum. If you are chasing visibility, already have a few dives behind you or are staying on the Kemer side, book Kemer. If you have two free days, do both and let the contrast be the point. Compare all five trips on the tours page, reserve free online and pay on the day, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Not sure? Message us with your hotel name and we will tell you honestly which day suits you better.

Frequently Asked

Is the water really clearer in Kemer than in Side?+

Yes. The Kemer coast has the clearest water on this stretch of coastline, mainly because the sea drops away steeply there and carries very little sediment. We would rather say so plainly than oversell the alternative.

Can I dive the Paris II wreck or the DO-28 plane as a beginner?+

No. Both sites lie between roughly 19 and 31 metres and are certified-only dives arranged on request. They are never part of a standard bookable day trip.

Which trip is better for a first ever dive?+

Both work, and neither requires a licence. The Side Underwater Museum is the more memorable first dive because the sculptures give you something to follow at about 12 metres, and we keep groups to three or four divers per instructor.

Can I do both trips in the same holiday?+

Yes, on separate days. Just plan them so that your last dive is at least 24 hours before your flight home.
