What to Do After Your Dive Day

What to Do After Diving

Keep the rest of the day gentle. Do not fly for at least 24 hours after diving, drink plenty of water, skip the sauna, the hot tub, heavy exercise and heavy drinking, and eat a proper meal. Diving is not exhausting in the way a hike is, but sun, salt, breathing dry compressed air and a full day on a boat add up. If you feel unusually tired, that is normal; if you feel unwell in any unusual way, tell us or seek medical advice rather than waiting it out.

That is the short version. Below is the reasoning, plus what an evening in Side can look like when you want to do something without undoing the good of the day.

The 24-Hour Flying Rule

This is the one non-negotiable item. After diving, your body carries dissolved nitrogen it needs time to release, and the low cabin pressure of a flight speeds up what should be a slow process. The standard guidance for a day of repetitive diving is a minimum 24-hour surface interval before flying — and because every one of our trips includes two dives, treat 24 hours as your floor, not your target.

In practice this means planning backwards from your flight. If you fly home on a Saturday morning, Thursday is your last safe dive day, not Friday. High mountain roads count too: a drive up into serious altitude has the same underlying issue. We explain the mechanism in /blog/why-no-flying-after-diving, and it is worth reading before you book your last dive of the holiday.

The First Few Hours

Once you are back on land, three simple things help.

Rinse your swimwear, hang your towel, and if your ears feel a little full, let them settle naturally rather than poking at them. If equalising was awkward during the dive, read /blog/how-to-equalize-ears-diving before your next trip — technique fixes most of it.

Alcohol

A glass with dinner is a personal call, but heavy drinking after diving is a poor idea: alcohol dehydrates you and dulls the very sensations you would want to notice if something were not right. Give it a few hours, drink water alongside, and keep the celebration modest on dive nights.

A Gentle Evening in Side

Side is well suited to a low-effort evening, which is exactly what you want after a boat day. The old town sits on a small peninsula you can walk end to end at a stroll, with the Roman theatre, the ancient street and the harbour all within a few minutes of each other. The Temple of Apollo columns at the western tip are a favourite for sunset, and they ask nothing of you but a short walk.

Beyond that: an early dinner by the water, an ice cream along the promenade, a quiet look through the shops, and an early night. Most divers sleep unusually well after a day at sea, and that sleep is doing you good.

If you want to keep the sea theme going without another tank, snorkelling is an easy, no-nitrogen option for a following day. See /diving/snorkeling-trip. And if the sculptures stayed with you, /blog/side-underwater-museum-guide tells the story of what you swam over.

When Can You Dive Again?

Usually the next day, and many guests do exactly that. Consecutive dive days are normal, and a second day is often better than the first: the equipment feels familiar, your breathing settles, and you notice far more of the marine life described on /diving/marine-life.

A few sensible conditions apply. You should feel well, be properly rested and hydrated, and have had no trouble on the previous dives. If you had ear problems, a headache that would not shift, or any symptom that concerned you, wait and get advice first — we will never push you to dive.

Certified divers doing several days in a row should keep their own profiles conservative and let the guide know their plan for the week. If you are ready to add a certification to the habit, CMAS courses are available on request, and /diving/padi-courses explains how training days fit alongside the boat trips.

Whether you want a second coast, a deeper day or simply another look at the Underwater Museum, all five trips are on /tours. Reserve free, pay on the day, and if you have any question about diving again this week, just ask us on /contact.

Frequently Asked

How long after diving can I fly?+

Wait at least 24 hours. Every one of our trips includes two dives, so treat 24 hours as the minimum surface interval, not a target. Plan backwards from your flight: if you fly on Saturday morning, Thursday is your last dive day.

Can I go to the hammam or sauna after diving?+

Better to leave heat treatments, saunas, steam rooms and very hot baths for another day, along with hard massages and heavy exercise. Choose a shower, water, a proper meal and a quiet evening instead.

Can I dive again tomorrow?+

Usually yes, and many guests do. Consecutive days are normal if you feel well, are rested and hydrated, and had no trouble on the previous dives. If anything worried you, wait and get advice first.

Is it normal to feel tired after a dive day?+

Yes. Sun, salt, dry compressed air and a full day on a boat are tiring even though the diving itself feels easy. Rest, drink water and eat properly. Anything beyond ordinary tiredness should be checked rather than ignored.
