Where Alanya's great limestone headland shoulders into the Mediterranean, the sea has been quietly at work for thousands of years — dissolving, drilling and hollowing the rock into a maze of sea caves, tunnels and shadowed overhangs. The famous show caves you can walk through in town are only half the story; the other half sits below the waterline, in the clear waters off Cleopatra Beach.
This guide is our honest local briefing on the Alanya underwater caves: how the coastline came to be so riddled with hollows, the true story of the Mediterranean monk seal that made these caves famous, and — most practically — which parts a first-time diver can peek into on a guided try dive, and which passages are strictly for certified divers.

A Coastline Carved Into Caves
Alanya sits on and around a massive limestone promontory, and limestone is the sea's favourite raw material. Rain and groundwater seeping through the rock dissolve it slowly from within, while waves and winter storms hammer it from without. Give that process a few hundred thousand years and you get exactly what you see here: a shoreline pocked with cave mouths, collapsed hollows, arches and deep overhangs — some yawning open at the surface, others hidden entirely beneath it.
Underwater, the terrain off Cleopatra Beach is classic Alanya: rocky reefs, tumbled boulders, short walls and cracked ledges, with cave entrances appearing as dark doorways in the pale rock. Light is the great performer here. On a bright day, sunbeams slant through the clear water and rake across the cave mouths, turning entrance chambers into rooms of shifting blue light. Even at try-dive depths there is real drama in simply hovering in front of a dark opening and letting your eyes adjust.
The caves are also apartment blocks for marine life. Crevices and shaded hollows are exactly where octopus like to den, where grouper hold territory and where moray eels watch the traffic go by. A short way along the coast, near Alanya harbour, lies the Amphora site, where ancient clay jars rest on the seabed — octopus, grouper and moray are regulars there too, though the sea signs no contracts and we never promise a specific animal on any dive.
The Monk Seal — A Story We Tell Honestly
Ask an Alanya local about the sea caves and sooner or later the Mediterranean monk seal comes up. Monachus monachus is one of the rarest marine mammals on Earth — only a few hundred individuals are believed to survive across the entire Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, and the species is strictly protected. Centuries of hunting and coastal development taught the survivors to abandon open beaches and retreat into the most hidden places the coast offers: quiet sea caves with underwater entrances, exactly the kind of shelter Alanya's limestone shore provides. That is why this stretch of coast is woven into the monk-seal story, and why the caves feel like more than rock — they are natural heritage.
Now the honest part, because we would rather lose a booking than invent a fairy tale: you should not expect to see a monk seal. Sightings anywhere on this coast are extremely rare events, the species is critically endangered, and the animals actively avoid people. No dive operator can promise one, and any operator who does is telling you a story. What we can promise is the habitat itself: the caves, the light, and the reef life that genuinely lives here.
Respect is part of the deal. If a cave shows signs of being used by seals, the right move for divers is simple — stay out and keep your distance. Protecting a critically endangered animal mostly means leaving it alone. We think knowing the story makes the dive richer: you are swimming along a coastline that still holds space for one of Europe's rarest creatures, whether or not it shows itself that day.
What Beginners Can See — and What Is Certified-Only
Here is the clear line we draw, and we draw it in exactly the same place on every trip. For beginners, the Alanya day is a guided discovery format: a gentle first dive at 5–8 metres for 15–25 minutes in the morning, then a second dive to about 13 metres — the beginner ceiling — in the afternoon, always with an instructor and always in open water. No licence is needed and complete beginners are welcome. Certified divers come out on the same boat and dive the real profiles: roughly 30 metres on standard certified dives, and down to 60 metres on the deep sites for suitably qualified divers.
At those depths the caves are genuinely part of your dive — from the outside. You can:
- Hover in front of cave mouths and look into daylight-lit entrance chambers
- Follow walls and overhangs where the rock leans out above you but open water stays behind and above
- Watch how light, shadow and fish traffic play around the openings
What you will not do as a beginner is penetration — passing beyond the daylight zone into passages where rock closes over your head. Overhead environments demand certification, training and planning, and they are never part of a try dive — not with us, not with any honest operator.

Beginners dive without a licence from around age 10; ask us about options for younger children. A few honest health notes: diving is not suitable during pregnancy or with severe asthma, heart or respiratory conditions, and you should not fly within 24 hours after diving — plan your last dive day accordingly.
