Winter Diving in Side: Does It Run, and What Is It Like?

2026-07-26 ° 4 min read

The Honest Answer First

Yes, winter diving in Side is possible — but it is not a season you can plan like summer. The Mediterranean cools to around 17°C, the weather decides which days are workable, and many operators along the coast wind down for the winter months. We would rather tell you that plainly than promise a calendar that does not exist. The practical rule is simple: if you are here between December and February and want to dive, message us with your dates and we will tell you honestly what is possible while you are in town.

What 17°C Actually Feels Like

Seventeen degrees sounds cold on paper, and compared to August's 28–29°C it certainly is. In practice, with a proper wetsuit — included with every trip, along with all the rest of the equipment — it is brisk rather than punishing, especially for the kind of dive profiles we run: a first dive at 5–8 metres for 15–25 minutes, and a second at about 13 metres. You feel the freshness on entry, your body settles within a minute or two, and the suit does its job. What we will say honestly: winter diving suits people who are reasonably comfortable in the water. If this is your very first dive ever and you have a choice of dates, spring or autumn will give you a gentler, warmer introduction — see our guide to spring and autumn diving.

Why Winter Days Can Be Quietly Wonderful

When conditions line up, a winter dive day has a magic the high season cannot match. The coast is quiet, the boat is quiet, and the dive sites are empty in a way August guests never see. Calm winter days can bring beautifully clear water, though we will not pretend every day delivers — visibility along this coast is generally at its best in late spring to early summer and in autumn, and winter is simply more variable. What is guaranteed is the atmosphere: unhurried briefings, all the instructor attention you could want, and a fresh lunch on board a boat that feels like it is yours alone.

Winter Ideas for Certified Divers

Quiet months are a natural time for certified divers to head for the coast's deeper signature sites. Certified guests dive the real profiles from the same boats — around 30 metres on a standard certified dive, and down to 60 metres on the deep sites for suitably qualified divers. The DO-28 aircraft wreck rests at 19.5–23.3 metres and the Paris II wreck lies at 21–31 metres, both comfortably inside that range and both for certified divers only, never for discovery divers; which site you get depends on your qualification level, the conditions and the day's plan. Whether they are diveable on a given winter day depends entirely on sea conditions, which is one more reason the conversation starts with a message to us rather than a booking button. Bring your certification card; logbook signing is part of every trip.

Health and Planning Notes That Matter More in Winter

If Winter Does Not Work Out

Sometimes the honest answer to a winter request is: not this week. If that happens, you have two good options. Plan a return in the shoulder season, when the water is milder and visibility is generally at its best — our month-by-month guide lays out the whole year honestly. Or, if your dates are fixed, ask us anyway: conditions change, and we would rather check the sea for you than have you assume the answer is no.

Winter diving in Side is real, occasional and quietly special. Do not book blind and do not assume — send us a message with your dates, and you will get a straight answer about what the sea is offering that week. Reserving is free, and you pay nothing until the day itself.

Frequently Asked

Can I dive in Side in winter?+

Sometimes, yes — but it depends on the weather, and many operators wind down for the winter. The honest way to find out is to message us with your dates; we will tell you what is genuinely possible that week.

How cold is the sea in winter?+

Around 17°C. With the wetsuit that is included on every trip it feels brisk rather than punishing, especially at our beginner depths of 5–8 and about 13 metres. It suits guests who are reasonably comfortable in the water.

Is winter diving good for complete beginners?+

It can be done, but if you can choose your dates, spring or autumn offer a warmer, gentler first dive. If winter is your only window, write to us and we will advise honestly.

Do the health rules change in winter?+

No — they apply year-round: no diving while pregnant, or with severe asthma, heart or respiratory conditions. When in doubt, consult your doctor and the standard diving medical form, and never fly within 24 hours after diving.
