How Long Does Scuba Certification Take?

2026-07-27 ° 4 min read

The Short Answer

An entry-level scuba certification is a multi-day commitment, not an afternoon. In practice you should set aside several consecutive days of your holiday: one for theory and the first dry and confined-water work, then two or more days of open-water dives, with a rest of the evening in between. Some people stretch the same content over a relaxed week; almost nobody finishes it properly in a single day.

We run CMAS courses on request rather than on a fixed calendar, which is actually good news for a visitor: tell us your dates and we build the schedule around the days you have, rather than the other way round.

The Three Parts, and Why Each Takes Time

Theory. Pressure and what it does to your ears, lungs and air supply; equalisation; how to plan a dive with a computer or tables; the no-fly rule after diving; what to do when something is not going to plan. Some of this can be read before you travel, which shortens the in-country part considerably — ask us and we will point you to the right material.

Confined-water skills. This is the part people underestimate. You practise clearing a flooded mask, finding and clearing your regulator, controlling buoyancy so you hover instead of bouncing, and sharing air with a buddy. None of it is difficult; all of it needs repetition until it is automatic. Repetition is what eats the hours.

Open-water dives. You then repeat those skills in the sea and do proper dives, spread over more than one day. A course cannot honestly compress this: the point is that the skills work in real conditions, not in a swimming pool.

Why It Needs Holiday Planning

Three practical reasons to book a course at the start of your stay:

Water temperature also shapes the experience rather than the timetable: the Antalya sea runs from around 17 °C in winter to about 28–29 °C in late summer, and visibility is generally at its best in late spring to early summer and again in autumn. Wetsuits are included with every trip and course, so cooler months are a comfort question, not a barrier. More on that in our visibility guide.

What If You Do Not Have the Days?

Be honest with yourself about the calendar. If you have two or three free days in a busy week, a course will dominate them and you may finish rushed. The better use of the same time is guided diving: our five day trips each include two guided dives, all equipment, free two-way hotel transfer, lunch on board and insurance, at €43–€50. Do the Side Underwater Museum one day and Kemer another, and you will have four dives and two very different coastlines in your memory — then take the course on a trip where you have the room for it. See the beginner route if that sounds like you.

What About the Medical Side?

Every diver completes a standard diving medical questionnaire. If anything is flagged — asthma, heart or respiratory conditions, certain medications — you need a doctor's sign-off before you dive, and that takes time you should plan for. Diving is not for people who are pregnant or who have severe asthma, or heart and respiratory conditions. We are not doctors and we will never tell you that a condition is fine; we simply tell you what needs a signature. This post covers the topic in more detail.

Ask Us for Your Dates

Because our courses run on request, the honest answer to "how long will it take me?" depends on your dates, your comfort in the water and how much theory you do before you arrive. Send us the days you have and we will tell you plainly whether a certification fits, or whether two guided trips will make you happier. Reserving any trip is free, you pay on the day in cash or by card, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. Hotel pickup is in the morning, with the exact time confirmed the evening before.

Frequently Asked

Can I get certified in one day?+

No — not an entry-level certification. Theory, confined-water skills and open-water dives realistically need several consecutive days. What you can do in one day is a guided discovery dive: two dives with an instructor beside you, no course required.

How many days should I reserve in my holiday?+

Plan for several consecutive days plus a spare one for wind, and make sure the last dive is more than 24 hours before your flight. Because we schedule CMAS courses on request, send us your dates and we will tell you if they work.

Can I do the theory before I travel?+

Often yes, and it meaningfully shortens the time you spend indoors on holiday. Ask us when you enquire and we will point you to the right material for your course.

Is it faster if I have already done a try dive?+

It usually feels faster, because breathing underwater and clearing your mask are no longer new. The course content stays the same, but you spend less time getting comfortable and more time learning.
